Where Auckland Chefs and Waitstaff eat on their days off

We all love a ‘best of’ list, and guides like Cuisine’s Good Food Guide are veritable bibles for good eating. But it’s also really interesting to know where our hospitality industry go when they have time off - there’s no more discerning critic of a restaurant or cafe than someone who works in one every day. So where do our chefs and waitstaff eat? The Lewisham Awards list is a good place to start as winners are nominated and honoured by their hospitality peers - here are some of the local favourites from this year.

Fantail & Turtle

Set in Goodside in Smales Farm, Fantail & Turtle is a large eatery, perfect for sunny afternoon eating and drinking outside. Local craft beer and cider flows from 15 taps (there’s even an on-site microbrewery) and there’s a cracking wine, gin and cocktail list too. Add a vibrant menu of modern shared plates and you can see why it was named Outstanding Local Establishment for North Auckland.

Prego

To still fill your dining room and courtyard nearly 40 years after opening is quite the feat in the ever-fickle Auckland market. Named Outstanding Local Establishment for Central Auckland by the industry and public vote, Prego in Ponsonby has truly stood the test of time - still remaining as relevant and vibrant as it was in the 80s. People flock for their great Italian food and fun vibe, and always have trouble dragging themselves home!

The Kohi Beach Eatery

This restaurant is worth going to for the beach and water views alone, so the fact that it also has a great (day and night) menu and excellent service makes it an obvious choice for East Auckland’s Outstanding Local Establishment. Modern New Zealand food and drinks by the water in the Eatery; great grab-and-go fare and ice cream next door in the Store. All moods covered.

Et Tu Bistro

Run by Te Atatu Peninsula locals, Et Tu Bistro has been a firm favourite since it opened so it’s no surprise it was voted Outstanding Local Establishment for West Auckland by hospitality peers. Nestled in the main shops it serves small plates as well as those designed for when you just don’t feel like sharing. Flavours run from duck noodles to St Louis Ribs and everything in between.

Hallertau Clevedon
Who doesn’t love a Biergarten? Especially when it’s Hallertau on the taps. It was undoubtedly voted Outstanding Local Establishment for the South because it’s a whole destination experience. Sunny outdoor eating and drinking, one of New Zealand’s favourite range of beers, close to the farmers' markets and the beautiful beaches of the Pohutukawa coast. Casual food with big flavour with great brews is the order of the day, and they do it well.
