The best of the best restaurants and cafes in New Zealand

With domestic travel on the cards for many Kiwis this summer, it’s worth knowing where to go when you’re heading to a different city. And what better accolade for any restaurant than to be awarded top billing by people in the hospitality industry itself? Let’s face it, chefs and front-of-house professionals are some of the fussiest when it comes to rating other people’s eateries, so being nominated and voted by peers is high praise indeed. Here’s a hit list for your next out-of-town culinary adventures.

Waikato

Heading to the mighty Waikato? Palate in Hamilton is where it's at. Not only winner of the Outstanding Restaurant award, it was also hatted in the recent Cuisine Good Food Guide; it’s a celebration of great New Zealand ingredients cooked expertly in creative ways. And definitely don’t miss Alpino (awarded Outstanding Regional Establishment and also hatted in 2023) for a true taste of Italy, right in Cambridge. It’s not just the food, which is excellent, but also the vibrancy of friendly service that will make you think you’re in Rome or Milan.

Canterbury

If you’ve ever been to Black Estate in Waipara you won’t be surprised it won both Outstanding Regional Establishment and Supreme Establishment on top of being awarded Cuisine magazine’s Winery Restaurant of the Year. The food is incredible, with a huge commitment to supporting some of the country’s best producers - and washing down their amazing kai with their sensational wines is the icing on the cake. And if you’re looking for a special experience in Christchurch itself, Inati - winner of Outstanding Restaurant and two-hatted restaurant - is definitely it. Simon and Lisa Levy’s Chef’s Table experience has brought a little bit of London (Simon worked as head chef at Gordon Ramsay’s The Warrington) to Ōtautahi.

Bay of Plenty

Clarence Bistro in the Clarence Hotel (also hatted in the Cuisine Good Food Guide) has always been an amazing place to eat, only made better when Simon Wright (ex-French Cafe) took over the kitchen. Outstanding food, beautiful fitout - totally deserving of the Outstanding Restaurant accolade for the region. Utterly different but also worth a visit, is Flatwhite Waihi Beach, who won Outstanding Suburban/Regional Experience. It’s the beachside local every suburb wishes it had. Great food, incredible views and super friendly service, whether you’re in for brunch, lunch or dinner.

Wellington
When one eatery takes out both Supreme Establishment and Outstanding Restaurant as voted by the hospitality industry, you’ve got to think it’s worth checking out. Graze Wine Bar is popular not only because its food is excellent but also because of the focus on local, ethically sourced ingredients and suppliers - and waste minimisation. And on the Kāpiti Coast 50-50 serves exceptional modern New Zealand cuisine with a global twist making it thoroughly deserving of Outstanding Regional Establishment. Unsurprisingly both were hatted by Cuisine this year too.

There's so much excellence to be celebrated up and down the country. Happy eating in 2024!
