Great places to get coffee in Wellington

Wellington is known as the birthplace of the New Zealand coffee scene, and still remains one of the best cities in Aotearoa to get a good brew. There are plenty of excellent places to go for a caffeine fix - here are four worth trying.

The Hangar

People all over New Zealand will be familiar with excellent Flight Coffee, so it only makes sense that their flagship cafe, The Hangar, would be a go-to for a great cuppa in the Capital (you’ll be blown away by the choices - there’s even a ‘flight’ if you can’t decide what to have). It’s also a pretty great place to eat, with a range of daytime options - from light and healthy to hearty and filling.

Swimsuit

There are three cafes in the Swimsuit family, each with its own loyal following. The group is owned by an award-winning barista and serves coffee from local roastery, Peoples. One of the best things to do on a Wellington morning is pull up a chair, order a cuppa and enjoy it with their signature cheese scone, dripping with melted butter.

Caffe L’Affare

Another name synonymous with great coffee in New Zealand is Caffe L’Affare. Established in 1990 the L'Affare team really have been part of the scene since the very beginning. Their flagship roastery is also a 145-seater cafe serving up everything from Tofu Salad to Bacon Butties.

Midnight Espresso

A Wellington institution, Midnight Espresso has been around since 1998. While most coffee shops close around 3 or 4pm, Midnight Espresso is open much later (the clue’s in the name). Serving up Havana Roast coffee day and night it’s also a great place for a quick bite - their cabinet has been drawing in locals for decades.
